That great big butterfly

Several of you have asked me what you do with the great big butterfly stamp in the 2013 Spring Occasions Catalog. It's just so big! I've been playing with it this week and made a couple of graduation cards using it two ways. I used the Swallowtail butterfly background stamp and the Lookin' Fine graduation stamp set and heat-embossed the butterfly at an angle, using Basic Black embossing powder. Then I colored it with markers, using Dafodil Delight, So Saffron and Summer Starfruit to get a lot of shades. I added a shadow with the Sahara Sand marker, then used the Color Spritzer Tool to add spattering in so Saffron and Sahara Sand to the background.

This next one came about as the result of a boo-boo! Does that ever happen to you? The embossing was incomplete on one of the butterfly wings, so I wound up using the Big Shot to die-cut it with the Top Note shape. I wanted to keep the look really clean and modern so I did not sponge or stitch the edges like you might typically do with this die cut.

I'm not positive I like the way it cuts the butterfly wings, but I do think the overall card is eye catching.

TIP: When everything was done on these cards, I added some sweeps of Crystal Effects so my butterfly is raised and shiny. Crystal Effects dries hard and clear and adds a ton of WOW to any project. Click here for a really cool Faux Canvas technique you can do with it.

Here's a version I did in Island Indigo and Pool Party. Which do you like better–the yellow one or this one? Does it "bug" you to have the wings cut off? Hee hee!

  1. These are great cards. I really like the blue one! I don’t have this stamp, but it really is starting to become hard NOT to own it when I see what amazing things you can do with it.

  2. yes, that is definitely a GREAT BIG butterfly, Lyssa! I have held off on buying it because I wasn’t sure what to do with it (as if that has ever stopped me before?) but I love the simple cards you showed using it, esp. Island Indigo! I don’t think the wings being cut off on the edges is that bad but it does like a little odd with the TopNote die edges cutting it off, I guess just because your eye tends to follow the natural line of the wings and then….oops! what’s with that wing? lol! But I love the way you tried something different using it.
