SU Cruise Day Five: Antigua

Stamp Tour 2010 408

The next day we sailed into Antigua and Mom and I took a history tour. If you are interested, I found a decent site here explaining in a nutshell the significance and special features of the main historic sites. Here were are at the Shirley's Heights military complex (that's Eric Clapton's private island and rehab center in the background). It was just a stunning day, though very warm. Some day I want to come back and explore the fascinating cemetery there and catch another couple of forts we did not get to.

Fellow demo Jackie Bultjie and her lovely daughter Stephanie were also on this tour and I so enjoyed getting to know them. I have lots of photos of them, they were so adorable together!

Nelson's Dockyard and the English Harbour was just awesome… only existing Georgian era dockyards in continuous use up tot he present day.

I could go off on many interesting rabbit trails in this post, as I LOVE history–for instance the fact that this church is called a "cathedral within a cathedral" because there is an outer building of stone constructed around an inner building of wood, meant to protect worshipers in the event of an earthquake or hurricane.

But I'll spare you the history lecture this morning and just say I really, really, REALLY missed my Handsome History Professor at multiple points on this trip. Here's a picture for the pirate lovers out there–one of the excursions you could take in several ports was pirate themed snorkeling tours and shipwreck dives. Something for everyone!

Argh… don't be walkin' the plank just yet, mateys… there's more posts where this came from!
