I love this design trick for making a smallish focal point pop, by visually bringing the eye in with a fake border. I often use it while scrapbooking, to knit separate images together to form a cohesive collection, but it's lesser known as a cardmaker's tip. If you took the white Stitched Rectangles frame off the above card, the little cross and banner would just be swimming in the middle, undersized and adrift. But with a border around it making the center of the card smaller, the proportions would great!

It's also just a fun element to add texture and interest to a card, without adding any weight or thickness. And it looks especially nice if you put dimensionals underneath the frame to pop it up off the base and cast a little shadow.
