Thanks for joining me for Day Twelve of my December 2012 blog series, the Procrastinating Crafter's Guide to (quick) Christmas Glam! I have had a ball working on 30-minutes-or-less, easy to make, "stuff around the house" projects that can add that spark of handmade to your holiday. We're in the final few days now, and I'm excited to share today's idea with you.
It's just your family Christmas card… but done up in such a cute way, the grandparents or doting aunties and uncles will love it! This is a super gift for the person who has everything. Use any picture frame (8×10 or larger works best) and pull out the glass. Pad the inside with felt or quilt batting, and cover with burlap (or fabric). Put the frame back together and decorate as desired!
I used Library Clips, Candy Cane Christmas fabric, and big Spice Cake
buttons from the Clearance Rack for mine, making the project super
cheap. I got the burlap remmnant at a second-hand shop and the frame I
already had, so this gift cost me maybe two bucks total?
It can also be reused year after year. Just switch out the year in the
little metal name plate holder, and pin or clip on new pictures for the
current year!
Here's a closeup of the poinsettia flower. I will admit that the flower takes a half hour by itself, apart from the picture frame project. Do you recognize what I used to cut the fabric-covered chipboard leaves and petals? It must be a Big Shot die if it cuts chipboard like butter, eh?
It's the heel and toe of the Holiday Stocking Bigz die! Isn't that funny? I was making this garland below for my team Christmas party and I had all these leftovers heels and toes when I finished. I couldn't just pitch them, right? And they did look like petals…. so I got out my glue gun and the handy-dandy new silicone crafting mat, made myself a little pile of hot glue and stuck the petals in. When the hot glue cools, you just peel your flower right off the mat, easy as pie. Love that nifty little mat!
All right! I am headed back into the Christmas card-making stamp mines… I ran out of cards by the time I got to "M" on my customer list yesterday. And I haven't even started on the family list yet! Yikes! Good thing this is such a pleasant task… see you back here tomorrow for a quick PCG project using vellum!
I thought this was great and made one last night for a handmade gift exchange I have on Monday. Thanks for the idea!!
I LOVE the poinsettia! The flower looks like it has dimension/lining underneath each petal/leaf. How was that done? Also, how many fabric pcs. can be cut at a time with the BS? I feel inspired, but need a little more info.
The petals are made from fabric covered chipboard, Debra, cut on the Big Shot. The new Silicone Mat makes it possible to lay down a whole wad of hot glue and poke the petals into it, giving the flower drastically more dimension that it would have otherwise. Hope that helps!
