Lilypad Lake and a cool new combo

Lilypad Lake blue heron stamp set river water rubber Stampin Up Lyssa

We made this great Lilypad Lake card at club last night and I couldn't wait to share the color combo with you! We have a lot of herons here in Wisconsin with all the lakes and rivers. Whooping cranes and snowy egrets, too. Wisconsin is like bird heaven.

So I knew this stamp set was going to be a big hit with my local stampers. This is just the first card I've made with it–can't wait to play some more! Here's some tips if you decide to recreate this one at home.

I needed my "water" to span the entire width of a 5.5 inch card. That left me with a not-so-pretty spot  because I couldn't be bothered to line it up, of course…. (ahem). IF you're like me, then you need ways to camouflage that area.

First I tied a double strand of Linen Thread around the piece, knotted it and brought the ends back around to the back. It didn't quite do enough to cover the area, so that's where I chose to put my heron.

From a design perspective, the shorter lake grasses and the lilypad piece then balance those two vertical elements and help break up the strong horizontal river lines, too. All while drawing the eye towards the focal point of the card instead of letting it "fall off" the edges like water would!

I love design tips like these and I hope you do, too! I enjoy incorporating them into every Class of the Month and Cheat Sheets resources I make. Thanks for making Song of My Heart a regular stop on your inspiration tour! Leave me a comment and let me know if you're going to try the easy layout or fresh new color combo.

  1. I love how you designed a super-cute nature card that’s not only fast & easy but gender-neutral as well. This is great for male or female. I’m going to use these colors… love me some Coastal Cabana.
