Yesterday I posted a picture of me after tasting Vegemite for the first time… only fair that I should post one of the man who instigated me to try it, right? But this is of Mike BEFORE… I didn't take one of after, apparently. So he still looks happy. He did finish his whole piece of bread, though, whereas I only gagged down the one bite while saying, "do I really have to swallow this?"
I know you've been waiting for my famous food photos! I've been all over the world, to England, Canada, Israel, Italy, Egypt, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean–and trying the food is half the fun! Much of our food in Fiji was pretty casual, or served buffet style, but I did get some fun ones…
This is FIjian pizza. I loved, loved, LOVED the flatbread crust. The toppings are similar to Hawaiian pizza, pineapple and ham, with the addition of tomatoes and cilantro. It was all totally fresh–and of course, eaten outdoors 20 yards from the ocean.
I ate food with the head still attached!!! That tells you how hungry I was. These are king prawns, shrimp with enough meat on them for three to be a full serving. The coconut curry sauce was to die for. We ate with Ann and Cecil Clemmer and here's how Ann's fish came…yikes!
Ann was brave and drank the kava… traditional ceremonial drink made from a root that is a mild mellowing-out agent. It makes your tongue and lips go numb. We used to sell it in the health food store for treating depression. I guess in quantity it can make you feel pretty groovy. Big industry in Fiji!Below is a photo of the kava stalls in the market–one whole part of the huge market is reserved just for kava.
We actually loved this dish at the Bonefish Grill so much we came back and ordered it again. I believe it is walu, then prawns, topped with a calamari tower. We'd never had calamari (squid) that wasn't breaded and fried before! And if you're wondering about the fries, they do have a tradition of potato wedges or "chips" due to the British influence down there.The potato cake below was to die for… love how they did the sauce for Mike's mahi mahi, too.
Our last day there we had some fabulous food in the "Salt" ocean-side cafe at the Sofitel. I had bacon fettucine alfredo–YUM. Everything tastes better on the beach! Throughly enjoyed our dinner and discussion with fellow demos Cristy Hirsch and Robin Merriman and their husbands.
I was a wee bit tired of seafood by the end of the week, however… they do a little pork and ham but basically no red meat. But guess what I ordered for lunch when we got back to L.A.? Clam chowder. No kidding.
