A friend is for always, not for sometimes

We start off November with the kids' birthdays, five days apart. This year it was Natalie's turn to have a party, so we had a houseful of eight and nine year old girls this weekend. She picked princess as a theme (again) so there was an awful lot of pink and purple at our house. I tempered it with some turquoise and yellow so it was a little more grown up.

Natalie chose cupcakes instead of a cake, which was great for me, because birthday week always coincides with my busiest time of year. At the last second I moved all the lit candles down to the lower levels of my four-tiered stand, because I was afraid the balloon would catch on fire!

Then it was present time… and I couldn't get anywhere near Natalie to get a good picture. She loved everything she got. Her friends have her pegged pretty well–Barbie, Squinkies, and ART SUPPLIES!

Of course, no little girl birthday party is complete without a bored big brother to torment the girls, right? I had made arrangements for Daniel to be elsewhere, but while he waited for his ride, he entertained the girls through the living room windows using my porch decorations. DSCF2914

I'm thankful my unique little girl has so many friends. I know the day will come when she is given the cold shoulder by shallow girls who think to build themselves up by stepping on anyone who is different from them, but today is not that day. I'm trying to teach her manners and poise and show her her worth in Jesus' eyes, but she gives me lessons on how to be a friend and I wish I had a tenth of her grace.

Happy ninth birthday, joy-baby… I would say, "I hope you dance," but you already do. I would say, "I hope you fly," but you were born with wings. Your mother is astounded and adoring. Now go play, butterfly, in your blossom-filled garden of friends.

  1. Lyssa, this post brings tears to my eyes. Happy Birthday Natalie! Your closing line makes me think of the song butterfly kisses… which brings more tears. Thanks for making my heart smile today.
