31 Pages in 31 Days 2016: Day Seven

  31 Pages 31 Days 2016-001

If you're just joining us, welcome to Song of My Heart Stampers' blog series challenge, 31 Pages In 31 Days! Every day during the month of August, I'll be posting a scrapbook layout for inspiration. I am running a Scrapbooking Summer School on four consecutive Thursday nights in August, and I've issued them a challenge–complete thirty-one pages in just thirty-one days.

You can play along at home, too! Join the online support group here at the 31 Pages in 31 Days official Facebook fan page! And use the hashtag #31pagesin31days to make your project searchable for everyone participating!

Another double-page spread today, a masculine one this time!

I'll be honest and share that one of my goals for this page was to cover up as much of that tiny black and white chevron pattern as possible! Maybe it's just me, but I went booglie-eyed every time I even glanced at it. When I cut the pieces for the packets for Scrapbooking Summer School, I had to turn the paper over to the other side so I could focus! Funny!

All that patterned black and white lent itself well to adding Basic Gray and Smoky Slate, with a little Gorgeous Grunge and Hardwood to dirty up the edges and cut all the crispness. 31 pages in 31 Days Song of My Heart 2016 7b

TODAY'S TIP: Sub in ANY accent color for the cool vintage turquoise I used, and this mostly-monochromatic layout still looks great. Why? Because the accent color is used proportionally to all the other colors (keeping in mind that the two photo mats on the left hand page will be 95% covered by the pictures, leaving only a rim of turquoise around them.) As a general rule, designers strive for 50% main color, 30-35% secondary color, and 15-20% accent color. If there's four colors involved, it's typically 40% main, 30% secondary, 20% secondary two, and 10% accent. Works for home decor–and scrapbook pages!

  1. Another great layout, love the pop of turquoise against the black and white. That oldie car is one of my favorite stamps, love how you used it on this page about grandpa!

  2. Hi Lyssa,
I don’t do scrap-booking but have followed you for a while now.
I am loving the color combo of these pages and especially love how you used the Gorgeous Grunge stamps! (one of my favorite stamp sets)
Also will be implementing the way you used the decorative label punch for your Grandpa and Classic!
    Very nice layout!
    Thanks for sharing!

I have been scrapbooking for almost 20 years but never have been told about the % of composition that you’ve outlined today. No wonder your pages are all so pleasing to the eye. Thanks for the great tip!!

  4. I love this layout because if you change the stamp and torquoise color, it will seem like a whole new layout and can be used over and over. Nice!
